Toppan Printing Develops the CP500 - One of the World’s Fastest ID Card Printers
Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. (hereafter Toppan Printing; head office: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; President & CEO: Shingo Kaneko) has developed the "CP500", one of the world’s fastest card printers for issuing cards such as ID cards, student cards and admission cards. The machine will be released in March 2012 and sold exclusively through the GET Group (except in Japan). GET is the global leader in the identification industry and the relation with Toppan is ongoing for more than 15 years.
Through the use of pigment ink, the CP500 maintains the
characteristic durability and high security of previous Toppan Printing products
as well as the ability to handle items ranging from magnetic cards to
contactless cards and contact IC cards but the issuance speed has been roughly
doubled. Compared with previous products the size has been reduced by roughly a
third and the weight reduced by around a half to create a compact and light
printer. Introducing the CP500 will enable the issuance of various types of ID
cards in a small space and in an efficient manner.
This product is scheduled to be displayed on GET Group booth at CARTES 2010, one of the world’s largest card-related exhibitions, which will be held at the Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition center in France from December 7 to 9, 2010.
In 2003, Toppan Printing launched sales of CP400, a card printer that offered world class high-definition and light resistance together with advanced security achieved through the use of original technology. In 2005, the version used as the printer for the issuance of ID cards for the US Department of Defense was made available in Japan as the CP400-II and in 2006 Toppan developed the CP400-III, which is compliant with the European Union’s "Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (RoHS*)".These products are used by organizations including companies, schools and government bodies throughout the world.
Toppan Printing has developed the CP500 with enhanced productivity in order to respond to needs for the issuance of ID cards, which are becoming increasingly common throughout the world. With this product, Toppan Printing has achieved one of the fastest printing speeds in the world by increasing the speed of print processing and halving the printing time of previous products. By improving structural design, the company has also been successful in producing a product that is significantly lighter and more compact.
As with previous Toppan Printing products, the CP500 is capable of printing with the world’s highest resolution (600dpi) for a desktop card printer. Counterfeiting is also difficult due to the use of a unique and original technology (printing using pigment ink).
Features of the CP500
=One of the fastest printing speeds in the world
Compared with the previous Toppan Printing printer (CP400 III), the printing time has been roughly halved (from 53 seconds to 28.8 seconds) and one of the fastest printing speeds in the world has been achieved: 125 cards/hour (in the case of one side, CMYKP ribbon), or 80 cards/hour (in the case of both sides, CMYKPKP ribbon)
=Significant reduction in size and weight
-size: Around two-thirds of size of previous Toppan printer (comparison of volume)
Previous Toppan printer: 550*300*425mm
-Weight: Around half of previous Toppan printer.
Previous Toppan printer: 34kg
Features maintained from previous products
- The world’s highest resolution (600dpi) for a desktop card printer
- Counterfeiting is difficult due to the use of a unique and original technology (printing with pigment ink).
- The world’s highest level for light resistance (strong resistance to color fading caused by light such as ultraviolet rays)
- Conforms with Japan’s Green Purchasing Law, to which local governments throughout Japan are responding
- Use of holograms is possible (optional)
Specifications of the CP500
-OS: Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7/ Windows Server 2008

In targeting commercialization, Toppan Printing will continue with development such as the improvement of stability and aim to launch sales in August 2011. Using high-security features and the speed of issuance, sales will be expanded for this product as a card printer for both domestic and overseas public cards such as the Japanese Basic Resident Registration Card, for which a large number of cards will need to be issued at high speed.
This is a regulation adopted in Europe on the restriction of the use of specified hazardous substances in electric and electronic machinery. It was established to minimize the dangers posed to the environment and people’s health in all stages from a product’s production to its disposal.
